Special Nominating Convention – House District 68 (Virtual)
July 29, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Calling all engaged citizens! Ready to run for office but missed the filing deadline for 2020? We have an opportunity for you to consider.
The Democratic candidate for House District 68 in Gallatin County has withdrawn from the election. Under these circumstances, the Gallatin County Democratic Central Committee has the responsibility to fill the vacancy prior to the General Election.
We’re calling on YOU to run for this office and help us flip a State House seat. We shouldn’t leave any race uncontested if we’re going to keep turning Gallatin County blue!
On Wednesday, July 29, the Gallatin County Democratic Central Committee will hold a special nominating convention to fill this vacancy for House District 68. To be considered for this position, please complete the linked application form by Monday, July 27 at 5:00 pm.
At the convention, all nominees will be asked to give a 5-minute speech (or less) detailing their candidacy and desire to run for House District 68. We will also take nominations “from the floor” so if you miss the application deadline, you may still be considered for this position.

Montana Democratic Party Requirements: RULE 13 PROCEDURES FOR FILLING A VACANCY FOR A DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR AN OFFICE WITHIN ONE COUNTY
- Vacancies occurring among Democratic candidates that by law are to be filled by action of the county central committee shall be filled according to the provisions of this rule insofar as they do not conflict with state law.
- Appointment of a person to fill the vacancy shall be by a majority vote of the precinct committeemen and committeewomen present at a meeting called for that purpose and publicized throughout the county. The county chair shall provide reasonable written or email notice to committee members unless the deadline for filing the vacancy as determined by the election administrator precludes such notice, in which case notification by telephone shall be required.
- At the meeting, nominations of persons qualified to fill the vacancy may be made by precinct committeemen or committeewomen. Following the close of nominations, an election shall be held with each precinct committeeman and committeewoman voting for one person. (If more than one vacancy is to be filled at the meeting, separate votes shall be taken for each vacancy.) The person receiving a majority of the votes cast shall be reported by the county chair to the election administrator as the party nominee. If no person receives a majority of the votes cast on the first ballot, the name of the person receiving the fewest votes shall be stricken from subsequent ballots until one person receives a majority of the votes cast.
In summary, only the Gallatin County precinct committee people are eligible to vote during this nomination convention.
