2020 Election

It goes without saying that this is the most critical election of our lifetime. The health of our democracy is on the ballot. We want to make sure you have all the information you need to cast your vote safely, securely, and on time.

Important Dates

Mail Ballot Election

For the 2020 election, the Gallatin County Commission chose to hold a mail ballot election. Here is what this means:

  • Every active, registered voter in Gallatin County will be sent a ballot in the mail. Ballots will be mailed on October 9, 2020. In order for your ballot to be counted, the county must receive it by 8:00 pm on Election Day, November 3. When you receive your ballot, you have several options for returning it on time:
    • By mail – no postage is required as it is pre-paid
      • Put it in the mail as soon as possible but we recommend no later than October 24, 2020
    • In-person at the Gallatin County Election Department during business hours through 8:00 pm on November 3, 2020.
    • At drop-off locations across Gallatin County (see below) between October 9 and November 3, 2020
    • After returning your ballot, check here to confirm if it has been received.
    • If you do not receive a ballot in the mail by October 15, you may need to update your registration. We recommend you either contact the county or call/text the Montana Democrats Voter Assistance Hotline at (406) 272-4056 or 844-406-VOTE.
  • If you prefer, you can request a ballot and vote in-person at the Gallatin County Election Department starting on October 2, or one of the satellite election offices throughout the county when open (see below).

You can still register to vote!

In Montana, you can register to vote up to and on Election Day and still cast your ballot. Here are the important dates to know:

  • October 26 – Regular voter registration ends. Up until this date, you can mail in your voter registration form.
  • October 27 – Late voter registration begins. If you want to register, you must go in person to the Gallatin County Election Department or one of the satellite offices when open.
    • You may register in-person and vote on the same day.

Satellite Election Offices

The Gallatin County Election Department will be traveling across the county during October to open satellite election offices where you can register to vote, update your registration, and receive and vote a ballot in-person, or drop off your completed ballot.
